Mallen's Monday Memo December 7, 2015

Monday Memo

December 7, 2015

Dear Parents,

Last week was sure a fast week with no school on Monday, late start Tuesday, early out Wednesday and dress rehearsal on Thursday. Within that, we had a few extra music practices to prepare for the concert, so we didn’t get very far on what I had planned for last week. So, this week we will be doing a lot of last week’s work. Thanks for attending the Christmas concert! The students did a great job!!

We will be finishing up on our Cendrillon story this week. We will also begin a new story that we will finish next week entitled Heat Wave. This story is also one of our “amazing” stories about the effects of a heat wave on a farm. We will be working on the following skills with this story:  Fantasy/Realism, the comparing/contrasting, and reading a diagram,  as well as vocabulary and comprehension. We will be finishing this story next week. Our grammar skills with this story are on using past tense verbs. The spelling list will be sent home with Wednesday, with the spelling test next Tuesday.

We are working on our second module in Math. This module has us working on conversions using the metric system. We also do a daily review and a multiplication sheet each day. Keep working on those important facts each night.

Social Studies is what we will be working on this week! We will be working on the Southeastern Region of the United States. As always, if you have any artifacts or brochures from that area, please feel free to send it with your child and they can share it with us!

Just a reminder that on Mondays, the students will be bringing home DOGS (Daily Oral Geography) that will be due on Friday. They can use any resource to answer the few geography questions. Those that hand it in on time, have their names on it, and get it perfect, will be in a drawing for a prize each Friday. Thanks for looking for that and helping with that!

As it is Christmas, the giving time of year, I would like to do a few things. First, I would love for the students to “Pay it Forward” and do something nice for someone. Maybe shovel someone’s sidewalk, deliver cookies to an elderly neighbor, read a story to an elderly neighbor, visit the care center and talk with some of our new friends… the list is endless. If they do that, I am going to have them share what they have done with the class. I love hearing of the awesome things they do!!  Hopefully that will inspire them to do even more!! If possible, can you also send $2.00 with the students? I would like to do a cheer fund ornament from the class. Thank-you for all of that!!

As always, please feel free to call me with any questions/concerns!

Have a great week!

Monday Memo

November 30, 2015

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a great holiday!! We had a busy two days last week! We went to the care center and made holiday placemats with them and then played cards. We worked on a variety of Thanksgiving activities! On Tuesday, we took our Science test. The results were sent home with your child. Clown faces were put on the kids during art class on Monday. This week will be about preparing for the Christmas program on Thursday. Reminder that it is at 7:00 at the high school, on Thursday.

We are continuing on our “That’s Amazing” theme in reading this week. Our story this week is another version of the classic Cinderella tale. This version is entitled “Cendrillon”. I will be reading a lot of versions of Cinderella throughout this week. We will also be working on the following skills:  Vocabulary, Comprehension, using a Venn Diagram, working with the suffix –able, and fantasy and realism. Our grammar skills this week are over the use of main and helping verbs. As always, we will continue to work on a daily SRA. Our spelling list for the week is attached to this memo.

We are working on our second module in Math. This module has us working on conversions using the metric system. We also do a daily review and a multiplication sheet each day. Keep working on those important facts each night.

Social Studies is what we will be starting on this week! We will be working on the Southeastern Region of the United States. As always, if you have any artifacts or brochures from that area, please feel free to send it with your child and they can share it with us!

Monday Memo

November 9, 2015

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a great weekend! Last week went by quickly! We were busy with our MAP testing last week. It took a lot of our math time up and with the early out, it didn’t give us a lot of time for our math lessons. This week we had Counselor Johnson today and our library teacher Mrs. Streigel, tomorrow. She is doing a great job of teaching different things on the computer!

We will be reviewing reading skills this week through the reading the following stories:  Amelia and Eleanor Go For a Ride and Duke Ellington. We will be working on comprehension and vocabulary with these stories and we will be reviewing previously learned skills throughout the week. Our grammar lessons are reviewing nouns, singular nouns, plural nouns, common nouns, proper nouns, and possessive pronouns. Our spelling list is attached to this list. We will also be writing a personal narrative this week, taking this writing piece through the edited and publishing process.

We didn’t get very far in math last week. We had our early out, and we worked on the MAP tests two days. So, this week we will be continuing our focus on problem solving subtraction problems, both one and two step problems. Again, keep working with your children on their multiplication facts! There are some students who are doing a great job and others that need to keep practicing them. Once they have them, they will have them!!

We took our social studies test on Friday, and I sent the results home with them. We will be starting Science again, working on the body systems. This chapter just talks the basic about each of our body’s systems and the main organ in each.

Monday Memo

November 2, 2015

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a great weekend! What a busy week we had last week! We didn’t get through our Social Studies chapter  so our test will be this week, with a study guide coming home with them Tuesday and the test being on Wednesday.  Last week we went to the care center on Monday with our computers and made door signs through the use of the software, Inspiration. We also paraded our Halloween costumes there on Friday. We paired up with the first graders and did a computer activity with them. We printed that out for them as well as for our care center friends. We had an anti-bullying assembly on Monday. We were treated to some 6th graders putting on three Reader’s Theatre plays for us!! We had our Halloween party on Friday and thank our room parents: Norma Gonzalez, Jon Swenson, and Holly Dirksen for the wonderful party they put on for the kids! We also finished our Oct. 30th RC book and quizzed on that. The students received their new books on Friday. Thanks for having them read for 20 minutes a night!!

We will be starting a story this week, entitled A Very Important Day. This is a great story about a few families celebrating the day that they became American citizens! We will be working on the following skills this week:  Vocabulary, Comprehension, Multiple Meaning Words, Journal Writing, and Newspaper article writing. Our grammar skill this week is working on possessive singular and plural nouns. Our spelling words for this week are attached to this memo. We continue working on SRA each day as well. They are great for all reading skills the students need.

We are getting closer to the end of our first module in math. We will continue working this week on subtracting and regrouping numbers. We also will continue to work on our daily reviews and our daily multiplication page. Thanks, again, for having your child work on those each night! We are starting to do weekly timed tests for multiplication, so working on them is going to start paying off for them!

We didn’t get to this last week but we will this week:  On Mondays, the students will be bringing home DOGS (Daily Oral Geography) that will be due on Friday. They can use any resource to answer the few geography questions. Those that hand it in on time, have their names on it, and get it perfect, will be in a drawing for a prize each Friday. Thanks for looking for that and helping with that! Finally, a normal week for us to work on these! As I said above, I will send home the study guide Tuesday, with the test being on Friday.

As always, please feel free to call me with any questions/concerns!

Have a great week!

Monday Memo

October 26, 2015

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a great weekend! This is a busy week for us! It is our Anti-Bullying Week! Many activities are planned. I will include a few. You will also be receiving and have received some information about some of the plans. Today, the students are going over to the care center with their laptop computers. The idea is for each class to do a service project. For our project, they are going to do an activity with a resident. The site is called wordel and the kids will be making a wordel with them and we will bring them back to be printed and laminated. We will then present them with them at a later date. I thought the residents might get a kick out of working on the computer. We are also pairing with a first grade class this week and we will do the same activity for the first graders. It should be fun being a role model for them!

Our RC book The Jacket is due on Friday. I will be giving them another book on Friday  that will be due on November 15th. Thanks for having them read each night and watching that they are truly reading, not just looking around… Many have already passed this book and are reading another and that is fantastic!!

We will be starting a story this week, entitled Boss of the Plains. This is a great story about how the Stetson hat was made and the story behind that.  We will be working on the following skills this week:  Comprehension, Vocabulary, Writing a business letter, Making inferences, and some compare/contrast. Our grammar this week will be over plural nouns. Our spelling words have the  ir and ar sounds in them and are attached to this memo. We also do a daily SRA that you see come home each day. As I said at conferences, you want to see 80% on them. If they have a 90% or better, they get a sticker on their chart.

We will be continuing to work with standard algorithms in Math this week. We will be adding and subtracting numbers. We will also be doing our daily reviews and a fact sheet each day. Thanks for working with your children on knowing those facts as they will really appreciate that when we get to that unit!!

We are going to be  finishing up on the second chapter over the Northeastern Region of the United States in Social Studies this week.  We will be talking about the Iroquois Indian tribe that made their home in this region.

We also get to watch a Reader’s Theatre put on by a 6th grade class, on Tuesday! We have our service project at the care center on Monday. We are going to be with the first graders for half an hour on Tuesday. The students are to wear the color orange on Wednesday. Thursday is our Random Acts of Kindness day (refer to letter sent by Counselor Johnson). We will be parading to the care center with our costumes on, on Friday at 1:40 and then we will come back here for the 2:00 parade. Our party will be from 2:15-3:00. Thank you in advance to our room parents for the Halloween Party and for their time and talent!! The room parents for this party are:  Jon Swenson, Holly Dirksen and Norma Gonzalez is sending treats and drinks.

As always, please feel free to call me with any questions/concerns! I look forward to meeting with you at our conference time!!

Monday Memo

October 19, 2015

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a great weekend! We had a busy week last week! We had Counselor Johnson on Monday. She talked to the kids about bullying and they decorated sacks for Fareway with rules about bullying. Some 4-H students came to talk to the kids about 4-H. They gave a great presentation and sent some literature about 4-H home with the kids. We finished Bound for Oregon this week and the students got a new book, The Jacket, by Andrew Clement. Again, for those that need help reading it, thanks for reading a page to them, they read a page… Andrew Clement is a great writer of fiction stories and this story has a great lesson in it! For some of the kids, they will have this book read in no time and can go to the library and check out a book. This book is due to be tested by October 30th. I will be giving them a new book that day, which will be due on Nov. 15th.

We will be starting a story this week, entitled Tanya’s Reunion. This is a great story that touches on the generations of a family and the effect that they have on Tanya’s life. We will be working on the following skills this week:  Comprehension, Vocabulary, Words with root/spect in them, Making inferences, and some compare/contrast. Our grammar this week will be over singular and plural nouns. Our spelling words have the short oo and long oo sounds in them and are attached to this memo.

We are finishing up on the Northeastern Region of the United States in Social Studies this week.  I will be sending home a study guide over this chapter tonight, with the test being on tomorrow. Thanks for your help with your child studying for this test! On Mondays, the students will be bringing home DOGS (Daily Oral Geography) that will be due on Friday. They can use any resource to answer the few geography questions. Those that hand it in on time, have their names on it, and get it perfect, will be in a drawing for a prize each Friday. Thanks for looking for that and helping with that!

Reminder that we have an early out on Wednesday!

Mallen's Monday Memo (Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2015) and Monday, October 12, 2015

Monday Memo

October 5, 2015 and October 12, 2015

(Tuesday, October 6, 2015)

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a great weekend! We had a busy week last week! We tested over our Science unit and I kept the results to share with you during conferences. We completed our review week over our first theme and finished our Mysteries genre activities. This is a strange week. No school today as we prepare for conferences. We have an early dismissal on Tuesday and Thursday at 2:00 for our conferences and no school on Friday. We will try to get as much in as we can during these few days.

We will be starting a new theme with our reading entitled “American Stories”. This is a fun theme that I try to integrate the genre of historical fiction. The students’ RC books are entitled Bound for Oregon, which is a wonderful historical fiction book. I am reading the odd chapters to them and they are to read an even chapter each night. I will be reading chapter 7 today and they are to read chapter 8 tonight…

Our first story is about a family that is from Mexico and migrates to Iowa in the summers to help with farm work. The story is about how he learns to speak some English. I have heard that the town this story takes place in is Hampton, but I have nothing to verify that. Anyway, we will be working on the following skills throughout this story:  Vocabulary, Comprehension, Drawing Conclusions, and Contractions. Our grammar skills will be over proper nouns. Our spelling words have the ou and schwa o sounds and are stapled to this memo. We will also be writing a personal narrative throughout these two weeks.

We will be working with standard algorithms in Math this week. We will be adding and subtracting numbers. We will also be doing our daily reviews and a fact sheet each day. Thanks for working with your children on knowing those facts as they will really appreciate that when we get to that unit!!

We are starting on the Northeastern Region of the United States in Social Studies this week! We tested over our plant unit on Friday, and I kept the results to show you at conferences. If you or your family has ever visited the Northeastern Region and have some artifacts, brochures, pictures, etc… of this region, we would love for your child to share them!

In the next two weeks, we will be having our Healthiest Walk on Oct. 7th. We also get to have our librarian come and work with the kids on some computer skills!!

As always, please feel free to call me with any questions/concerns! I look forward to meeting with you at our conference time!!

Have a great week!

Mallen's Monday Memo September 28, 2015

Monday Memo

September 28, 2015

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a great weekend! We enjoyed wearing different themes each day to celebrate Homecoming week! The students enjoyed the parade on Friday and the outdoor assembly on Monday. That was a lot of fun!! Just a reminder to let me know, via email, text, phone call, or planner if you would be interested in being a room mother for one or more of our 3 parties. Thank-you in advance for your time with that!!

We are continuing our review of skills this week as well as working on the genre:  Mysteries. The students are listening to the story Encyclopedia Brown:  Boy Detective. With that, they are doing a variety of skills and activities. We are writing a mystery story and working on solving a few mysteries as well. We do a daily SRA as well, that is at their reading level. If they get a 90% or better, they get a sticker for their SRA chart. Once they fill a row, they get a prize!! Next week we will be beginning our new theme for reading! We do have a spelling list for this review week, with the spelling test being on Thursday. Our grammar lessons are all review of the previously learned concepts. The students RC book is due on Wednesday. (They are due the 15th and end of each month). Most of them have quizzed over at least one Encyclopedia Brown book and are either reading a second one or they are reading from another mystery series.  Thank-you for having them read at least 15 minutes each night!! I will be giving them their new book if they have passed their September 30th RC quiz. Their new book is Bound For Oregon. This is a book that I will read a chapter each day and assign a chapter to be read each night. It may not take them 15 minutes to read a chapter each night and if they have something else they want to read, great, otherwise I am just assigning them to read a chapter each night and really know it. If you need to read it to them or read a page and they read a page, I know that will be better for some of the readers. It is a great book though, that I really want them to experience regardless of their reading level!

For math this week, we will be continuing with rounding of numbers but now without the number line. We will be using numbers up to a million to round off. We also have our daily review and our daily fact sheet. Math is a busy time for us!!

We will be continuing on our plant behaviors and adaptations lessons. The students will bring home a study guide on Thursday, with the test on Friday!! Thanks for making sure they are studying those study guides as it really help them with their test scores!!

As always, please call with any questions or concerns!! Have a great week!

Sincerely,

Chris Mallen

Monday Memo

September 21, 2015

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a great weekend!! We had another busy week last week. We completed our second Science test. I have the tests in their files for conferences. You can ask them their score as they know what it is. There were some really awesome tests!! We enjoyed our time at the Belmond Health Care Center!! They are always so good to us and playing Bingo with new friends is always fun!! I encourage the kids to continue their relationships with their new friends and stop by and say hi when they can. We will be going there one time a month this year!! This week is Homecoming week. We will be watching the parade on Friday!

We will be finishing our Laura Ingalls Wilder story. They are reading an excerpt from the book By the Shores of Silver Lake. This week we will be working on noting details and completing some comprehension activities. The test over this story will be tomorrow. We will start a two week chapter on the genre of mysteries. The students will be listening to the story Encyclopedia Brown: Boy Detective. We will be doing activities over this story. We will be learning some special mystery words and writing a mystery story for our writing activity. Our spelling words will be sent home with their pre-test on Wednesday. The grammar lessons are all review for the next two weeks, going over subjects and predicates, kinds of sentences, nouns, and compound subjects. A lot of comprehension will be worked on throughout these two weeks as well.

For Science, we will be talking about plant adaptations. It is a very interesting chapter that the students really seem to enjoy. Once we finish this chapter, we will be starting Social Studies, where we talk about the regions of the United States. More information to follow in our Monday Memo.

With math, I want to continue to emphasize the importance of working on their multiplication facts. It will truly help them with their common core math. We will be working on rounding off numbers this week. I typically like to do the homework here at school so I can catch them if they are making any errors. However, some lessons I will send home as homework as I feel they understand exactly what they need to do. The homework is exactly like the problem set and exit ticket that I send home. If they have questions, you can refer to those two pages for help. They should be able to do it on their own. If not, we will be reviewing it during class. They just need to try.

On the back of this Monday Memo is an invitation to sign up to be a room parent. I appreciate in advance any help you can give me with this. I thank-you for your time and effort!!

Mallen's Monday Memo September 14, 2015

Monday Memo

September 14, 2015

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a great weekend. We had a busy week last week! The students have really settled into their routine and the talking has gone way down! We had Counselor Johnson last week for the first time. She spent some time just reminding the students of her role in our school… It also seemed so different having had Monday off. I am excited that we get to go to the care center on Friday! We will be going at the end of the day. We love going there and meeting our new friends. We will be visiting them once a month. It is always something the students look forward to and our friends at the care center do as well!

This week in reading, we are going to be finishing our unit on the Titanic. We will be working on the skills of comprehension, vocabulary, syllabication, and working on the thesaurus. Tomorrow will be the test over this story and the spelling test. We will start a new story on Wednesday that is an excerpt taken from the Laura Ingalls Wilder book “By the Shores of Silver Lake”. We will be working on vocabulary, comprehension, and noting details this week. We do an SRA daily. I love these as it lets the students move at their level, independently. The SRAs consist of a story and then vocabulary and comprehension questions as well as different reading and grammar skills for each story. The stories are literature rich and the students like them. We also have grammar lessons each day. This week our grammar is over common nouns. I will also be sending the new spelling words home with the students on Wednesday, attached to their pre-test.

In Math we are working on place value, the value of numbers and this week we get into greater than and less than. Each day we independently work on our daily reviews. I love these because they help the students work on skills that they will see on their Iowa Assessments. Daily multiplication fact sheets are also done each day. Again, I thank-you so much for working with your children each night on these important facts!! Especially down the road, knowing these facts will help them enormously in Math!!

We are working on behavior adaptions this week and focusing on the vocabulary of the chapter. We will be doing a study guide on Thursday, with the test on Friday. Thank-you for going through the study guide with them, as it helps enormously on the test! I will keep these tests until we have conferences. I will send them home from then on.

Tomorrow, (the 15th) the students are to have their first RC book quizzed on. This time they did a Judy Blume book. Once they pass that test (they get 3 times), they will get their new book. The new book is an Encyclopedia Brown book. I am having them read from the mystery genre. This book is to be read by Sept. 30th. If they pass the quiz before the 30th, I will give them another Encyclopedia Brown book. The books are pretty short and so I look forward to some of them reading more than just 1 in two weeks!!

Thank-you for signing their planner each night verifying they read for 15 minutes the night before!!

As always, please call/email with any questions/concerns!!

Sincerely,

Chris Mallen

Monday Memo

Tuesday, September 8, 2015)

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone enjoyed our long weekend!! We were very busy last week! The students took their first science test that I sent home with them on Friday. We had our first reading and spelling tests as well. The results of those were sent home on Monday. The students are really starting to understand the routine of 4th grade and I am pleased with how well it is going. Again, I want to thank you for making sure they read each night and for signing their planners to verify that. I have them stay in 15 minutes of their recess if they forgot to read the night before. I also appreciate you taking the time to work on their multiplication facts each night for at leefore ast 5 minutes. The payoff for the time spent doing that will be huge! They do daily fact sheets. I have been letting them use a multiplication table these first three weeks, but the table is going away after this week.

In Reading this week, we will be testing over our Grandfather’s Journey story. We will be starting our new story this week as well. This next story is also a favorite of the kids entitled Titanic:  Lost and Found. We will be working on a variety of reading skills throughout the week including:  Vocabulary, Comprehension, Outlining, Syllibication, and using a thesaurus. Our grammar lessons are over compound sentences. The spelling words will be attached to their pretest for now on, so you can be looking for that. We also will be working on non fiction through the use of our Scholastic News magazine. We also enjoy our Storyworks magazine that your contributions at the book fair help our class have a subscription of.

In Math we are continuing our place value lessons. We are also learning to read and write multi-digit numbers using base ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. We do a daily review each day. The first one I went through with the kids, but they will be starting to do these independently beginning this week. As I stated above, a fact sheet is also part of their daily routine. Using a multiplication table has been of great help to them, but after this week, they will no longer have them to use. So, again I thank-you for taking the time to go through those with them at least 5 minutes each night!!

As I said above, we took our first science test. This week we are starting on a new chapter over animal behaviors and characteristics. The students typically love this chapter because they love talking about animals!!

I have really enjoyed getting to know your children!! They are very talkative, but they are also very creative and pick up on new learnings very easily! Thank-you for sharing them with me this year!! As always, if you have any questions/concerns please feel free to email/call me!! As I said at before school conferences, I don’t always see what’s going on or they don’t tell me… So, if something happens that you think I should know about, please feel free to. I like to “nip things in the bud”  when possible and as soon as possible.

Have a great week!

Monday Memo

August 31, 2015

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a relaxing weekend! We have one week under our belts! I am truly enjoying getting to know your children!! They are very inquisitive and keep me on my feet!! We have been learning a lot of different things and I know it can be an overload! I think that as time goes, things will get easier for them.

In Reading this week, we will be finishing up on our story “Akiak” that we began last week. It is a great story about a dog that is an important member of an Idiatrod race. I think the students enjoyed it very much. We worked on a variety of skills including comprehension, vocabulary, predicting outcomes, and cause and effect. The plan is to test over the story tomorrow. We will start a new story this week entitled “Grandfather’s Journey”. It is a great story about a man who was born in Japan and then moved to the United States, and moved back and forth due to the love of both countries. Our first unit in Reading is entitled “Journey”. All of the stories the students will be reading will involve some type of journey. It is a fun way to start our reading for the year! We will be working on a variety of skills with this story including:  Vocabulary, Comprehension, Writing in a response journal and using a word web. Our spelling words this week are words with short and long i and o. Grammar this week will be over subjects and predicates. Last week we learned about the different kinds of sentences. We also will be working on SRA which are great little stories with questions and skills that are at the student’s reading level.

We are working on place value with our New York Engaged Math program. I have a huge favor to ask of you. We will be doing a multiplication fact sheet every day. The students really need to learn these facts! If you can work with your child 5 minutes each day on those, it will really pay off for them. If they don’t complete the fact sheet, it will be in their yellow folder to complete and return. We also work on a daily review each day. This review helps the kids retain skills in all areas of math! If they don’t finish that in the allotted time, that may be something you will see in their yellow folder that needs to be completed and returned. Everything we do for New York Engaged Math, will be completed at school! I will send home the completed sheets for you to look at. Again, PLEASE try to come up with 5 minutes a night to focus on multiplication facts!! The pay off towards learning them, will be huge in the future!!! Thanks for your part in helping your child with their math skills!!

We alternate science and social studies. We are doing science right now. Our first area of science is life science. We are talking about classification of living things. We have talked about the 5 kingdoms of living things and how we classify the different types of animals and plants that we have. We will have our first science test next week at some point. I will let you know details via next week’s Monday Memo which you will receive next Tuesday!

Every day we devote a period of time to computer skills. We will also do some interactive science activities during that time. Our librarian is going to come monthly and work with the kids on some resource based websites. We are excited for this opportunity for the kids. We will also have our Counselor Johnson time two times a month. She is still working on her schedule.

Thank-you for your help in making sure your child reads each night. By signing your planner, you are verifying that they read for their allotted time. If it isn’t signed, I have them read for 15 minutes during recess to make sure that they read every day. I truly appreciate you helping them with that and with their multiplication facts!!

Thank-you for sharing your child with me this school year!! I look forward to the learning opportunities that await all of us this year!! As always, PLEASE call with any questions/concerns you may have!! I like to really tackle any problems right away and I don’t always see everything that is going on…

Have a great week!

Monday Memo
May 18, 2015

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a great weekend! This will be the last Monday Memo for the year. I have tried to include all the information I could think of in this note. We enjoyed Amy Bates  visiting us from the library and talking about the wonderful library program that will be held there!! I encourage everyone to sign up for it! Thank-you to our friends at the Belmond Care Center for treating us to a fabulous lunch on Friday!! That is so awesome that they do that for us every year!! This week we are looking forward to our track meet that will be at 9:00 on Thursday!! We are busy!!

This week in Reading, we will be working on the book Harriet the Spy. It is such a fun book and a great way to end our year. The afternoon of the last day of school, we will be watching the video over this great story!! Our week will have us listening to the story, reading the story, and doing activities over the story. I gave everyone their last RC book of the year, on Friday. Those are due the last day of school, and we will test over them that day, unless they read it sooner, in which case they can quiz early!! I still have a few that need some good scores from their RC quizzes!

In Math, we are going to finally finish module 3! We will be testing over this module this week as well. It will be our final week of math as we will be on our field trip on Tuesday and watching our movie on the last day.

I will be sending home a study guide over our fossils unit  on Thursday, with the test on Friday. It will be our final science grade for the year.

The last day of school, my plan is for the students to bring their own lunch. We will eat in our classroom, do the movie… They can bring whatever you would like for them to bring for their lunch. I thank-you for that!

It has been a pleasure having your children this year! They are all such kind, caring students! I wish them all the best in fifth grade!! I thank-you for sharing them with me!!

Reminders:
May 21:  9:00 Track Meet
May 26th:  Field Trip to Music Man Square
May 27th:  Last Day of School. The students are to bring a sack lunch that day.

As always, if you have any questions/concerns, please feel free to give me a call!

Have a great week!

Monday Memo
May 4, 2015

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a great weekend! We enjoyed our visit from Dirk Vanderlinden. He talked to the kids about what makes a good ad. We thank him for his time with us! We will be spending some time preparing for our fine arts festival which will be held Thursday night. We have counselor time two times this week due to her not being able to meet with the kids last month because of our testing. We also get to go fishing on Monday morning! It will be an eventful week for us!!

This week in Reading, we have finished all of the themes in our reading series!! Great accomplishment!! Our spelling will look a little different this week. We will be working on some spelling skills over a poem entitled “Ode to Spring”. So there won’t be a spelling “list” anymore this week.  Our grammar this week will consist of us doing grammar sentences which review the concepts we have learned all year long. We will also continue with our DOL (Daily Oral Language). For reading time this week we will be working on creating and publishing our ads for the Belmond Independent. The students chose their library books last week and those will be due on May 15th.

In Math, we are going to be continue to work on interpreting division word problems as a number of groups of a known and unknown size and interpreting and finding whole number quotients and remainders to solve one step division word problems. I still have a few students who truly need to work on memorizing their multiplication facts! That will make division so much easier for them! We also work on a daily division sheet along with our daily reviews.

Three of our Science days this week will be spent with Counselor Johnson. On Thursday,  I will be sending home a study guide for the Science test that will be on Friday.

As always, if you have any questions/concerns, please feel free to give me a call!

Reminders for the week:
May 7:  Fine Arts Festival
May 8:  Fishing with Mrs. Kern

Have a great week!

Monday Memo
April 27, 2015

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a great weekend! We will be map testing this week. We also are treated to a visit from Dirk Vanderlinden, from the Belmond Independent, who will talk to us about what makes a good ad and from that we will start next week on creating our ads!

This week in Reading we are finishing up on our Nature:  Friend or Foe unit. We will be reviewing the concept of adverbs and prepositional phrases this week during our grammar time. We have a spelling list that reviews words we have this unit and it is attached to this memo. We will also be reading two different stories working on the skills of comprehension, vocabulary, and will be reviewing suffixes and prefixes and what their meaning adds to a word. The students are to have read Sarah, Plain and Tall by Thursday. I am excited to say that most students have gone on to read Skylark, Caleb’s Story and the next one is More Perfect than the Moon. I had lent that book out to a student last year and didn’t get it back and it is not at our school library anymore. It is a good book, and it is at the Belmond Library should any student wish to read it. Their next book for May, due May 15th, is a library book of their choice.

In Math, we are working on interpreting division word problems as a number of groups of a known and unknown size and interpreting and finding whole number quotients and remainders to solve one step division word problems. We will also be doing our map testing during part of our math time, for three days, so we may not get all done. We will also be working on our daily multiplication pages and our daily review.

We will be map testing for three of our science periods this week. When we resume science, we will be working on the questions to review our rocks and minerals unit. It has been fun taking a look at some of the student’s rock collections!

As always, if you have any questions/concerns, please feel free to give me a call!

Have a great week!

Monday Memo
April 20, 2015

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a great weekend!  We finished the Iowa Assessments last week! This year we only did two reading tests, two math tests, and a social studies and science test. We didn’t test over an hour each of the three days. The students were treated to a snack and milk each day. This week we will be doing the MAP tests, which are a computerized test. It may be next week before we get to it. We are also going to be starting our ads that we create for the Belmond Independent. It is always a fun activity for the kids and once they are published in the paper, we will receive a copy for each student to take home to youJ So, we will be keeping busy these final weeks!

This week we are starting a new story about frontier life and the effects a drought had on their life. I am sure many of you will remember reading the wonderful book Sara, Plain and Tall. This excerpt that we will be reading comes from the second book in the series entitled Skylark. We will be covering a variety of skills throughout this chapter. We will be talking about Comprehension, Vocabulary, Sequencing, Word Roots, and working on the parts of speech part of the dictionary. Our grammar this week is over prepositional phrases. Our spelling words are attached to this memo.

On April 15th, I gave the students their next RC book. The book is mentioned above. It is Sara, Plain and Tall. I appreciate you having them read each night for 20 minutes!! I was so pleased with how well most of the students did reading their RC book for April 15th. This was the first time this year, the majority passed the RC quiz! I am thrilled!! Let’s do it again on April 30th and this time everyone pass their quiz!!

For math this week we will be working on representing numerically 4D dividend division with divisors of 2,3,4, and 5, decomposing a remainder of up to 3X. We will also be solving division problems with a zero in the dividend or in a quotient. Again, thanks for working on those multiplication facts with the students each night. It truly makes their math that much easier! We are still working on our daily fact sheets and our daily reviews!

We tested over our earthquake and volcano unit on Friday. I sent the results home with your child. This week we are starting a unit on rocks and minerals. We will be answering a few questions this week. Those questions are: What are Minerals? What are Rocks? What is the Rock Cycle? Hopefully by the end of this week, the students will have some answers to those questions.

I hope everyone has a great week!! As always, please call with any questions/concerns!! Thanks for all you do for your children!

Have a great week!

Monday Memo
April 6, 2015

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter break! It is so nice to be enjoying spring!! It seems like we waited a long time for it to come…

This week we are starting a new story about the wildfires at Yellowstone. Again, it goes perfectly with our theme:  Nature:  Friend or Foe. The story talks about the damage the wildfire caused and the good things that came from that. We will be working on the following skills:  Comprehension, Vocabulary, Main Idea, Supporting Details, and analogies.  The grammar lessons this week are over writing with adjectives. We will also discuss the use of the words good and well. The spelling words are attached to this memo.

Just a reminder that your child has a library book for their RC book, which is due to be tested by April 15th. I appreciate you having them read each night for 20 minutes!!

For math this week we will be working on determining whether a whole number is a multiple of another number. We will also be exploring properties of prime and composite numbers to 100 by using multiples.

We are starting a new unit in Science this week. We will be talking about volcanoes and earthquakes. It goes nicely with our nature theme in reading.

I hope everyone has a great week!! As always, please call with any questions/concerns!! Thanks for all you do for your children!

Have a great week!
